SILTEX

Siltex is a natural and inexpensive way to reduce organic silt and improve water quality in both lakes and rivers, in private and public waterways. It is environmentally friendly and is harmless to plants and animals, and because it recycles organic material, it is a great benefit to the aquatic ecosystem. SILTEX also stimulates the aquatic food chain and helps to increase biodiversity.

New Improved Quality
This new variety of Siltex is a softer and more soluble type of chalk that will continue to dissipated unwanted organic matter. Just see the difference!
What is Siltex?
SILTEX is a highly porous form of Calcium Carbonate, or chalk, made up of minute particles. Being Calcium Carbonate it is completely harmless to plants and wildlife.

What are the main benefits of using Siltex?
It decreases organic and oxidisable matter which is displayed as
a reduction in silt levels
It increases oxygenation and stimulates aerobic micro-organisms
It improves water clarity by settling suspended waterborne solids
It reduces methane production by silt body
It counteracts acidity in the water and the silt
It provides essential Calcium for plants and wildlife
It increases biodiversity within the water bodies

Where can Siltex be used?
SILTEX can be used in freshwater environments such as ponds, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, canals and fisheries where organic silt accumulation is a problem. It can also be used to raise the pH value of water bodies suffering form acidification.

How does it work?
SILTEX can be used in freshwater environments such as ponds, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, canals and fisheries where organic silt accumulation is a problem. It can also be used to raise the pH value of water bodies suffering form acidification.Firstly, we need to understand what silt is. Silt is organic matter, plus sand and clay, combined with water, which forms a spongy mass. Organic silt accumulates when the micro-organisms that normally feed on the organic matter are no longer present, due to low oxygen levels and increased acidity. The microscopic SILTEX particles are able to penetrate right in to the silt layer and create the right environment for the micro-organisms to re-establish themselves and start to digest the organic matter, thus reducing the silt volume. SILTEX works best when the silt has a high organic content, combined with acidity.

How do you apply Siltex?
SILTEX is supplied in 25kg bags and can be applied by simply sprinkling it over the water surface. Large areas of water can easily be treated by applying SILTEX from a boat. SILTEX is applied at a rate of 1 tonne (1,000kg) per acre of water surface for the first dressing, followed by a second dressing of 800kg per acre 6 months later. Most sites will benefit from regular treatment to combat continual organic accumulation from trees and other vegetation. PLEASE NOTE: SILTEX should always be applied to the whole water area, not just the worst affected parts.

WATER TEST KITS

Price:
£350.00
(plus delivery and vat)

We happy to offer the water testing kits we use for our day to day monitoring of our fish farm and fisheries. The kit allows you to quickly check eight water quality parameters including; Oxygen, temperature, Ph, ammonia, nitrite and hardness and it’s easy to use.

Under the new CEFAS (DEFRA) bio-security measures we are obliged to carry out regular monitoring of our waters which now total over thirty. We needed a system that offered accurate results, ease of use and cost effectiveness.

The system we offer will allow you to keep a good record of water quality parameters in your waters and help to provide early warnings of any looming water quality issues.

I have no hesitation in offering this system as a good practical and cost effective way of looking after your fish remember over 90% of fish problems start with water quality.

CAGES

Zip Cages
The AJS Fisheries zip cages are without doubt the best fishing holding nets we have every used. Designed and built out of necessity and tested over the last 15 years we are now happy to offer them for sale.

The nets are constructed from a soft material that is as fish friendly as possible. The one metre cubic capacity gives plenty of fish storage and the nature of the material allows a good water exchange maintaining optimum water quality conditions for the fish. The cages are easy to handle in and out of the water.

The large lid retaining zip means that once your valuable stock are zipped up they are not going anywhere. Ideal for grading, setting up orders or short term stock retention.

The cages are supported by a plastic push fit floatation collar allowing good buoyancy and the ability to collapse the cages at the end of a hard days netting for stowage.

Prices

Full zip cage including floatation collar and heavy duty zip: £100.00

Spare net mesh: £75

Spare collar: £35
Extra foam floatation for collar: £25

Our cages are black in colour however green ones are available as a special order POA.

CARP CLAY

We have been working hard over the last few years to improve our fish stocks in our fisheries and fish farm. One area that we have been closely looking at is skin, scale and fin quality. Our research has led us to a very special type of clay regularly used by top koi breeders and keepers.

The clay has a very high mineral and trace element profile and can really help the condition and quality of your stock.

We have been using the clay under our automatic feeding units and a 25 kg sack disappears within days of its introduction. I am convinced that the fish pick the clay up whilst feeding and also there is important ion exchange across the gills as the fish disturb the clay whilst feeding.

In my opinion the clay helps with food digestion and also by providing essential minerals and trace elements hence promoting growth and fish health.

I would recommend anyone to try it and see the improvements in their stock.

With all of the tragic KHV outbreaks this year we have been working with BIOLINK to make their superb BIO VX concentrated virucidal disinfectant available to fishery managers, fish farmers and angling organisations.

Bio VX is broad spectrum and effective against bacteria, fungi, yeasts and all known classes of virus. Because of superior dilution rates it is highly cost-effective, works equally well in both hard and soft water and is unaffected by temperature.

General Properties
Bio VX is a pink powder consisting of a stabilised blend of peroxygen
compounds, surfactants, organic acids and an inorganic buffer system.

Instruction for Use
Use Bio VX as a dip for angling and fishery equipment.
Manufacturer’s recommendations are a dilution rate of 1:200 which
equates to 0.5kg to 100l of water. Equipment should be fully
immersed in the disinfectant and not rinsed in clean water.

HYDRATED LIME

Hydrated Lime or Calcium Hydroxide is used to breakdown organic silt in situ. The dose rate is 250-300kg per hectare or roughly 250-350lbs per acre.

The best time to apply hydrated lime is December through to March.

Hydrated Lime should be evenly applied to the waters’ surface where required. We would suggest that a maximum of 20% of the water area is treated at any one time.

Hydrated Lime can be harmful to aquatic life.
It is ideal for spot treatment of small silty areas within lakes and ponds.

Liming To Sterilize
Hydrated lime, or calcium hydroxide, is also used in commercial fish production ponds. While it will increase total hardness (the calcium component), and temporarily increase the total alkalinity (the hydroxide component), its primary effect is to raise the pH of mud and water quickly and dramatically.
Ponds should be drained and cleaned prior to applying this product. Enough hydrated lime should be added to cover the entire pond bottom with a thin layer (approximately 900kg per acre), and then water added. The pH in the upper layer of the mud and in the water will rapidly rise to 12 or higher, a level which will kill most disease agents and/or pests. The elevated pH will last for about a week, prohibiting any stocking of fish. Always check the pH before stocking.

Adding hydrated lime is not recommended when fish are present in the pond. The rapid increase in pH is almost always lethal to fish.

The use of hydrated lime is recommended when there is any concern of carrying diseases or pests over to the next crop. It has limited, long-term impact on total alkalinity and pH.

Appropriate safety measures should be taken to prevent he inhalation of its dust, those applying it should wear hooded suits, gauntlet gloves, face masks and goggles.

Liming should not be carried out in wet or windy weather.

Carp naturally require minerals found within Rock Salt and they find it very attractive, almost irresistible at some times of the year.

It may be that the carp are able to mitigate osmotic loses via seeking out Rock Salt. It seems particularly effective in spring time when the fish may use it for physiological support and to help rid themselves of ecto parasites, such as leeches and fish lice, that have built up over the colder months.

One thing is clear carp find Rock Salt very attractive.

If using Rock Salt in your fishery for management or angling please use it sensibly. Too much salt can be detrimental to the aquatic ecosystem.
